Lagombra Bicycle Rollercoaster

by Brian Fichtner, 15 July 2008

rollercoaster1.jpg

The Swedish artist and designer Anders Jakobsen, also known as Lagombra, has created a bicycle rollercoaster for the MU Art Foundation in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, to coincide with the designhuis exhibition "The Dutch Bicycle." Constructed of raw wood and scaffolding and fabricated with little more than a chainsaw, the installation resembles an undulating series of toppled dominoes.

With hairy bank turns and a highest peak of nearly two meters, the narrow installation is open to anyone willing to risk life and limb for a thrill ride. According to the MU's director, only one daredevil has been able to complete a circuit.

"The Dutch Bicycle" provides an overview of the bicycle as a means of transport, recreational activity and practicing sport. The exhibition aims to show how this ordinary, yet historically relevant, object remains a crucial subject of research, design, and creative expression.

Ian Curtis memorial stone stolen

Ian Curtis
Ian Curtis's fame lives on years after his death

The memorial stone dedicated to former Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis has been stolen from a Cheshire cemetery.

Curtis was 23 when he hanged himself in the kitchen of his Macclesfield home in May 1980, shortly before the band were due to go on tour in the US.

Cheshire Police said the memorial stone was taken from where he is buried in Macclesfield Cemetery.

Officers are appealing for anyone with information on its whereabouts to contact them.

Detectives said the kerbstone, which has the inscription "Ian Curtis 18 - 5 - 80" and the words "Love Will Tear Us Apart" was taken sometime between Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

"Unusual theft"

A police spokesman said: "There is no CCTV in the area and there are no apparent leads as to who is responsible for the theft.

"This is a very unusual theft and I am confident that someone locally will have knowledge about who is responsible or where the memorial stone is at present."

We are agog that someone's gone to the trouble of taking it out. We are stunned
Tony Barker, Macclesfield Borough Council

Tony Barker, spokesman for Macclesfield Borough Council, which runs the site, said: "It would usually have flowers behind it and mementoes to Ian Curtis's life.

"It wasn't concreted in but tarmacked up to it.

"This has never happened before and we are agog that someone's gone to the trouble of taking it out. We are stunned."

Bill North, the council's services manager, added: "I'm shocked this has happened.

"Someone's gone to a great deal of trouble to remove the memorial stone and I hope our appeal will help return it as soon as possible."

Although the band reformed as New Order after Curtis's death in 1980, there has been an upsurge of interest in its work.

An acclaimed biopic about Curtis, called Control, was released in 2007 and a film documentary, called Joy Division, was released earlier this year.

H2O GO!

Anyone who knows us knows what huge H2O supporters we are and have been throughout the years... from seeing them everywhere from CBGB to opening for Sum 41 at Hammerstein Ballroom and everything in between, H2O has always been one of the favs (hell I even have a fucking H2O tattoo! One Life, One Chance baby).

Anyways, they just teamed up with Bridge Nine Records to release their new album, 'Nothing to Prove' - and it is evident that they haven't lost a step in their 13 years together.... go buy the album and peep their new video for "What Happened?" with guest spots by Michael Rappaport, Matt Skiba, Lou Koller among others.

Jane Birkin

Jane Birkin fans mark your calendars. On 05.23.08 @ 7pm, MoMA is screening Blow-Up, the 1966 classic directed by Michelangelo Antonioni. The film is based on a short story by Julio Cortazar, features the music of legendary Herbie Hancock, and stars David Hemmings, Vanessa Redgrave, and the forever fashion "It" girl Jane Birkin. "Antonioni's foray into Swinging Sixties London is as metaphysical as it is sexy. This spellbinding picture-puzzle of a film derives its erotic charge as much from photographer Hemmings's determined pursuit of the ever-elusive truth contained in his grainy images - most mysteriously, a lovers' tryst in a deserted park that may or may not have ended in murder - as it does from his unfailing seduction of statuesque fashion models." Read the full synopsis. Watch the trailer and this Yardbirds video from the film. Click here for info on getting tickets. They can be purchased in person only, which adds a bit of a kink to it all. This one's for die hards only.
